Christi Carla McCray Obituary - 2024 (2024)

Christi Carla McCray was born on September 15, 1966, to Christopher C. and Jewel E. McCray. Christi accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age and faithfully served as an active member of the Greater Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church. Upon graduation from Waycross High in 1984, Christi selected Valdosta State as her college of choice. During her time at Valdosta State, she became a member of the Theta Tau Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated in 1986. Christi graduated with honors from Valdosta State with a Bachelor’s in Business Administration/Marketing. Christi quickly put her business degree into practice working in Sales and Marketing for organizations in Tallahassee, Florida.

However, it was during her tenure with Visit Florida – the official tourism marketing corporation for the state - where she gained national and international recognition as a marketing expert negotiating corporate sponsorships in key markets such as New York, Atlanta, and Toronto. During her tenure as Director of Promotions, she led a team responsible for generating more than $300 million in advertising equivalency and more than 21 billion consumer impressions. Christi was recognized as a Rising Star in the Tourism Industry by Travel Agent Magazine. Christi coordinated marketing programs for such organizations as The Tallahassee Radio Center, Hallmark Cards, Dunkin Donuts, Southwest Airlines, U.S. Department of Commerce, and the Florida Chamber of Commerce. Christi’s expert integrated marketing skills took her all over the world with her final landing spot being Cleaver Brooks in Thomasville, Georgia at the time of her transition.

Despite the demands of her career, Christi was an advocate for social justice and made time to support the citizens of Tallahassee and Leon County through her service with the Tallahassee Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Her commitment to service led to her being unanimously elected as the First Vice President of the Branch in 1995. Christi oversaw programming and events ensuring that all citizens were aware of the services offered and work accomplished through the NAACP. In 1996, Christi was the recipient of the Outstanding Community Service Award by the Tallahassee Chapter of 100 Black Men and a 1997 Commitment to Excellence Black Achiever Award recipient presented by the Tallahassee Branch of the NAACP. Since that time, Christi continued to answer the call to serve as a Board member of Zion Cares at New Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church in Tallahassee, Florida and through her active membership with Tallahassee Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.

Christi was an avid sport-enthusiasts and could be found during the fall and winter seasons cheering on her Valdosta State Blazers, Georgia Bulldogs, and Dallas Cowboys. Christi was not only gifted in marketing, but also in the culinary arts as she often hosted epic dinner gatherings for family and friends. The events were a time of fun, fellowship, and delicious food prepared by Christi in an environment full of laughter and love.

Christi’s last social media post came on Mother’s Day as she honored all Mothers and Mother-Figures. She also updated her profile picture with a photo of she and her mother with the caption “I Miss You Momma” and declared that God is good! On May 14, 2024, Christi heard her Heavenly Father say “Well done thou good and faithful servant. Come home and take your rest”, and at that moment a heavenly reunion took place with her parents (Christopher and Jewel McCray) and Sisters (Cynthia and Linda).

Here to cherish her memory and celebrate her legacy are her niece Brandi Threat, Grovetown, Georgia, great nieces Jahann Threat, Grovetown, Georgia and Jaelah Threat, Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Brother-n-law, Bobby Tolliver, Tallahassee, Florida and host of cousins, friends, classmates, sorority sisters, and forever friends.
