Every Main Mario Character And Their Voice Actors (2024)

Highlights

  • Long-time Mario voice actor Charles Martinet steps down after 30 years; newcomer Kevin Afghani takes over in Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
  • Princess Peach has had the same voice actress, Samantha Kelly, for nearly two decades, along with other characters in the series.
  • While most Mario characters have English voices, Yoshi stands out with Japanese voice actor Kazumi Totaka, known for his work on Nintendo games since 1997.

The Super Mario Bros. games have somehow managed to balance consistency with innovation. This is how you get the beautifully expansive world of Super Mario Odyssey starring the same "wahoo" plumber whose vertical prowess scarcely extended beyond jumping over barrels.

15 Video Game Characters Who Surprisingly Share The Same Voice Actor

There are a lot of video game characters that share the same voice actor and some of the pairings may surprise you.

You may also associate some of that consistency with the series' voice cast, which seems to change about as often as the decor at a skating rink. But you might be surprised to know that there have been some shake-ups in that department over the years.

1 Mario

Kevin Afghani

That's right, long-time Mario voice actor Charles Martinet has officially stepped down from the role after over 30 years. Newcomer Kevin Afghani took over in Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and the fact that nobody noticed until it was announced is one heck of a testament to his skills.

Along with those two, and Chris Pratt in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Mario has seen several others provide his vocals over the years. This most notably includes wrestler Lou Albano in the 1990s Super Mario Bros. Super Show and even Transformers legend Peter Cullen in the early 1980s cartoon Saturday Supercade.

2 Luigi

Kevin Afghani

You just know Nintendo wouldn't cast a new voice for Mario without first ensuring they can do a bang-up Luigi too, and Afghani has clearly nailed it. Replacing Martinet once again, his debut in Wonder is a double threat.

You also heard Charlie Day as Luigi in the movie, but many others have come before. The Super Mario Bros. Super Show saw Canadian actor Danny Wells in the role, while late Saturday Night Live cast member Tony Rosato took over for subsequent animated shows.

3 Princess Peach

Samantha Kelly

Unlike Mario and Luigi, Princess Peach hasn't changed her voice in nearly two decades. Voice actress Samantha Kelly has played Peach since 2007, along with several other characters in numbers that easily rival Martinet's own range.

Every Super Mario Game Where You Can Play As Princess Peach

Move over, Mario. It's Princess Peach's time to shine! Today, we go over every Super Mario game in which you can play as Peach.

Anya Taylor-Joy famously played Peach in the beloved animated film. She was preceded by a number of others including Sailor Moon voice actress Tracey Moore and voice acting legend Jen Taylor, who played Peach for a solid decade and has notably voiced a number of iconic video game characters.

4 Toad

Samantha Kelly

Keegan-Michael Key may be the most recognizable name to have played Toad thanks to his appearance in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, but it's Samantha Kelly yet again whose voice you most likely know. Like Peach, she's been playing Toad since 2007, giving Toad that "smoking a helium cigarette" quality you know and love.

As with Peach, Kelly took over the role from Jen Taylor, and prolific voice actor John Stocker was the first to play Toad and other characters in various animated shows. Meanwhile, former Nintendo developer Isaac Marshall provided those iconic yells of his heard in Mario Kart 64.

5 Bowser

Kenny James

Contrary to what Jack Black's movie performance would have you believe, Bowser isn't often quite that talkative. Voice actor Kenny James has spent the past nearly 20 years living the dream of growling incoherently into a microphone to the delight of millions as the big Mario-hating Koopa, and he isn't the only one.

Before James, voice actor Scott Burns had the part for several years, which included Bowser's rare speaking role in Super Mario Sunshine. Interestingly, both Charles Martinet and previous Toad voice John Stocker have also played the character at various points.

6 Bowser Jr.

Caety Sagoian

Bowser Jr.'s tenure has been a relatively short and sweet one. Voice actress Caety Sagoian has played him and Baby Bowser (yes, they're different characters, somehow) since 2007.

Before Sagoian, actress Dolores Rogers had the role starting with Super Mario Sunshine, and she also played others around the games. She's been playing Wiggler and various Piantas to this day, and you can even hear her as some of the latter characters in 2024's Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door remake.

7 Yoshi

Kazumi Totaka

Interestingly, while most Mario characters feature English voices in all territories, Yoshi bucks the trend with a Japanese voice actor, and he's an absolute icon. Kazumi Totaka has been the voice of Yoshi and several others since 1997, but that wasn't his first claim to Nintendo fame.

Totaka is also a composer known for his work on games ranging from the Game Boy to the Nintendo Switch, but he's also been the voice of Yoshi and several others since 1997. Voice actor Andrew Sabiston played Yoshi in early animated appearances, but it's Totaka's voice that you'll never forget.

8 Princess Daisy

Giselle Fernandez (They/Them)

Daisy is everyone's favorite high-octane chaos princess, a quality you can thank previous voice actress Deanna Mustard for. Voice actor Giselle Fernandez took over the role in Super Mario Bros. Wonder, flawlessly picking up Mustard's energy and proving themself a perfect successor.

Before Mustard began playing Daisy in 2003, you guessed it, Jen Taylor was there yet again. It's like she had a sixth sense for legendary video game character casting calls.

9 Wario

Kevin Afghani

Despite not appearing in Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Wario has indeed also been retired from Charles Martinet's repertoire. Keeping things flush, Kevin Afghani has taken over this role as well, first appearing in 2023's WarioWare: Move It!

As mentioned, Martinet was previously the instantly recognizable voice behind Wario going back to Mario Kart 64. Truly, the world will never forget his contributions to this noble fart machine.

10 Waluigi

Charles Martinet(?)

It seems that Waluigi may be in a bit of a limbo at the moment, and not the stretchy backward kind despite how he'd clearly dominate. Charles Martinet has been the sole voice of Waluigi since his debut in Mario Tennis on the Nintendo 64, but what does the future hold?

Who deserves a spin-off more than the Mushroom Kingdom's premier weirdo?

Waluigi hasn't starred in any new games since 2019's Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, so he hasn't had the chance to get a new voice just yet. But when he does, it's probably safe to assume that Kevin Afghani will take one more role under his belt.

11 Rosalina

Laura Faye Smith

Rosalina is still a relatively recent addition to the various sports, party, and Mario Kart games in the series, but she's been around long enough to see several voice changes. Currently, Genshin Impact and Fire Emblem Fates voice actress Laura Faye Smith has the role.

Voice actress Mercedes Rose played Rosalina in her first few appearances, including the Super Mario Galaxy games, before Kerri Kane took over in 2011. Kane and Smith spent some time sharing the role before Smith ultimately became the character's main voice, a role she keeps to this day.

12 Donkey Kong

Takashi Nagasako

For a character who's a whole actual gorilla, Donkey Kong has seen a shocking number of voice actors; currently, his whoops and hollers are provided by accomplished Japanese voice actor Takashi Nagasako. Preferable to Seth Rogen's chuckle in the movie? You decide.

But before that, beloved video game composer Grant Kirkhope of Banjo-Kazooie fame had the role starting with Donkey Kong 64 (yep, that's him crooning "okay" when you save). Others among his nearly 10 voice actors included Charles Martinet himself in Mario Kart 64 and Richard Yearwood, who played the title role in the definitely-not-embarrassing-in-hindsight Donkey Kong Country animated series.
