Non Spoiler Synopsis : What could go wrong as a foodie who gets a table at the most desired place to eat?

The Menu is written by Seth Reiss and Will Tracy, directed by Mark Mylod, and released in 2017.

The menu illuminates the dichotomy between the haves and the have-nots. Anyone who has worked in the service industry can relate to the frustration of some people never being satisfied or satiated. The movie also explores how we can lose our passion when driven by perfection and the desire for fame, recognition, and to please others.

ā€œGiving everything you have to please people you'll never know.ā€ Chef Slowik

I love a movie that delves into the rich complexities of society, and ā€œThe Menuā€ does just that by dividing people into patrons, providers, consumers, and servers. The movie highlights the greed and entitlement that often accompany those who pay for or expect special treatment because of their status. It reflects the frustration of serving individuals who feel superior.

ā€œThe Menuā€ also explores toxic work environments, particularly where women endure sexual harassment and are objectified. Additionally, the film examines the sacrifices we make for our jobs; in this case, the employees literally sacrifice their lives. Society often leads us to believe that we cannot achieve more or do better without our current employment or circ*mstances.

The movie delves into complex relationships by illuminating power dynamics in relationships between spouses, friends, colleagues, employers, and employees. Who is the dominant person? It raises questions about what we tolerate, where we feel entitled, and how much we sacrifice ourselves for the sake of relationships or jobs.

The chefā€™s character is particularly intriguing. He began cooking out of love and passion but became burnt out and exhausted by the relentless pursuit of perfection. How often has work robs us of our passions?

He is contrasted by Margot (who we later learn her real name is Erin), who does not tolerate the status quo. She isnā€™t going to play the game because others say she has to. She is tired of others telling her who she is and how she is supposed to be. She will speak her mind and, in doing so, saves her life.

Ultimately, ā€œThe Menuā€ reminds us that we can be driven to the brink of death trying to please others, lose our humanity in consumption, or find solace in the simplest pleasures that often bring us the most joy.

The Menu: movie review (2)

Part 1: This week, itā€™s journal time. Take a moment to explore the following:

What do you tolerate because you have to? How would life be different if you didnā€™t have to? Why do you have to?

Where do you feel entitled? Why?

Where do you sacrifice yourself? Why?

What are you truly hungry for?

Part 2:

What simple things bring you pleasure? It doesnā€™t have to be huge. It can be eating a juicy cheeseburger, the sun on your face, the wind in your hair, a babyā€™s laugh, a hug, dancing, and so on.

Make a list, and add to it.

Try to do one thing off that list a day.

"The Menu" masterfully explores the complexities of society. It critiques the greed and entitlement of the privileged and the frustrations of those deemed to serve them. The film delves into toxic work environments, particularly the sexual harassment faced by women. It examines the extreme sacrifices employees make for their jobs. It explores entitlement, tolerance, and personal sacrifice in relationships and workplaces. Ultimately, the film reminds us of the dangers of losing ourselves to please others and the joy of simple pleasures.
