Catcher white-hot for Hogs | Arkansas Democrat Gazette (2024)

University of Arkansas catcher Hudson White kept up his recent tear with a solo home run in a 1-for-2 performance during the No. 2 Razorbacks' 14-4 loss to Texas A&M on Saturday at College Station, Texas, to complete the regular season.

White extended his hitting streak to 11 games and lifted his batting average in that span to .405 while boosting his season average up to .288. White has 38% of his hits on the season in the past 11 games.

White has homered twice during each of the past two weekend series.

"I think White might've hit three homers in this thing," Arkansas Coach Dave Van Horn said. "I don't know what he did for the weekend, but I'm sure he'll be one of those guys who has a chance to be player of the week in the SEC."

White hit 4 of 10 against the Aggies, including a tie-breaking three-run homer in the eighth inning of Friday's 6-3 win, with 3 runs and 4 RBI.

The junior transfer from Texas Tech was hitting .235 after an 0-for-3 game against Florida on April 26 before the streak began. He has five multi-hit games during the streak.

White, a 6-1, 200-pounder from Keller, Texas, has homered in five of the past eight games to take his season total to six.

Five for 20

The Arkansas Razorbacks reached the 20-win plateau in SEC games for the fifth time in school history with Friday's 6-3 win at Texas A&M.

Four of the 20-win league seasons have come in the past five completed seasons.

The Razorbacks' school record for conference wins is 22, accomplished in 1999 and 2021. The 2019, 2023 and 2024 teams all had 20 league wins.

Dossett dinged

Arkansas right-hander Cooper Dossett reacted immediately after throwing a ball four to Texas A&M's Hayden Schott on his 20th pitch of relief during the second inning Saturday.

Dossett flexed his right (pitching) arm and then held it down as he was swiftly seen by athletic trainer Corey Wood and the team's medical personnel. The sophom*ore from Springdale Har-Ber came out of the game and was replaced by Ben Bybee.

Coach Dave Van Horn said the team only had a preliminary report on Dossett's injury.

"The doctor said it's still structurally sound," Van Horn said. "We don't know. We'll find out as soon as we can and get him looked at with an MRI."

Aggies fans, who start shouting out the consecutive ball count to try to rattle opposing pitchers, got to "Ball five! Ball five!" with Bybee on the mound, the longest stretch of balls all weekend for Arkansas, before Ali Camarillo hit a double.

Fan club

Arkansas hitters struck out 12 times Saturday to bring their weekend total to 40.

Texas A&M reliever Chris Cortez record eight of his nine outs via the strikeout in the fourth through sixth innings, with Ben McLaughlin the only Razorback in the lineup who didn't strike out against him.

Texas A&M pitchers wound up surpassing their Arkansas counterparts, who had a 20-13 strikeout advantage after Thursday's 1-0 by the Hogs, including 14 by left-hander Hagen Smith. Razorback pitchers posted a series-low six strikeouts Saturday and finished with 33 for the series.

"Our pitching is solid," Texas A&M Coach Jim Schlossnagle said. "We competed with Arkansas. That's the best pitching staff we've seen all year."

Mac attacked

Arkansas right-hander Will McEntire allowed 4 runs on 4 hits and a walk while recording only 4 outs in his first start of the season Saturday.

McEntire allowed two home runs, two-run shots to Jace LaViolette and Caden Sorrell, doubling the amount of long balls he had given up on the season.

McEntire's ERA, which was 1.75 through his first 36 innings coverage 4 appearances, went from 3.67 to a season-high 4.29 after the rough outing.

The senior from Bryant had a streak of not allowing a run in each of his past three outings, come to an end on LaViolette's shot, his 28th, in the first inning.

Baby Wernes

Arkansas assistant coach Bobby Wernes had an excuse for missing the weekend series in College Station, Texas.

Wernes, the former Razorback and fourth-year assistant, was back in Northwest Arkansas with his wife Kristina, attending the birth of their second child.

Walker Robert Wernes was born Thursday, joining the couple's daughter, Lillian.

Wernes put out a post on X, writing, "Walker Robert Wernes. Baby and Mama doing great. Dad was fantastic during labor. Virtually zero pain on his end."

Arkanasas director of baseball operations Clay Goodwin coached in the first base box in Wernes' absence. Wernes is scheduled to re-join the team Tuesday in Hoover, Ala., on the eve of the Hogs' SEC Tournament opener.

SEC byes

Kentucky and Tennessee tied for the overall SEC championship after Saturday's results. The Wildcats fell 12-4 to Vanderbilt, while the Volunteers gained a game with a 4-1 win over South Carolina to complete a sweep.

Tennessee earned the No. 1 seed for the SEC Tournament for the second time in three years based on its 2-1 series win over Kentucky on April 19-21 in Lexington, Ky. The Volunteers won their final nine SEC series after dropping two of three at Alabama to open conference play.

The Razorbacks were set for the No. 2 seed and the second game Wednesday at the SEC Tournament after Friday's 6-3 win over Texas A&M. Kentucky will have the No. 3 seed and Texas A&M the No. 4 seed in Hoover, Ala.

Extra innings

Texas A&M improved its record to 49-51 against the Razorbacks, based on UA records, by winning its third home series in a row against the Hogs. The Aggies won all their home series this season.

Arkansas fans donned their traditional "beer hats" when the Razorbacks loaded the bases in the fifth inning for the first time in the series. Ben McLaughlin flied out to left field against Chris Cortez to end the threat.
