Memorial Day

In conjunction with American Legion Post 341, there will be a Memorial Day observance May 27 at the Bella Vista Memorial Garden Cemetery, 34 Buckstone Road in Bella Vista.

Lunch starts at noon with hot dogs and fixings, and the program begins at 1 p.m. with speaker Art Lawless and music by Echo. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets.

In case of rain, the event will be held at New Life Christian Church, 103 Riordan Road.

Short Film Festival

The Rogers Short Film Festival awarded four filmmakers "Best Of" honors in their categories and one filmmaker "Best of Fest."

The festival, held May 3-5 at the Victory Theater, screened 32 films from across the nation, hosted workshops for filmmakers, and provided time for networking opportunities in downtown Rogers.

Winners were "Drought" by Zoe Marie Brown, Student Category (K-12); "Mono No Aware" by CJ Mirch, Student Category (Postsecondary); "The Chain" by Tom Hipp, Amateur Category; and "Clownfish" by Clayton Henderson, Professional Category. Best of Fest went to "Otherside" by Kristen Buckels.

The 2025 Rogers Short Film Festival will be May 2-4 at the Victory Theater. The opening date for film submissions is Dec. 1, and the submission deadline is March 28.

History Day

Educators are invited to participate in a free National History Day workshop from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 17 at the Shiloh Meeting Hall in downtown Springdale. Led by Angela Adams, National History Day Arkansas affiliate coordinator and BSE supervisor at University of Central Arkansas, this workshop is tailored for school librarians and educators specializing in sixth to 12th grade social studies, gifted and talented programs, drama, literacy and technology.

National History Day provides students with opportunities to showcase their talents through performances, papers, exhibits, websites and documentaries while meeting literacy frameworks and developing essential skills in research, critical thinking, collaboration and communication.

Participants will also have the opportunity to explore the Shiloh Museum's exhibit hall.

Earn up to six hours of Arkansas professional development credit. Pre-registration is required as space is limited.

CACHE Workshop

Creative Arkansas Community Hub & Exchange will host Board Development and Governance, a free, in-person workshop for arts and culture nonprofit organizations focused on cultivating and maintaining an active and engaged board of directors.

The workshop, set for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 22 at The Medium in Springdale, will be led by Shunqetta Cunningham, CEO of KHARIS Group, a Jonesboro-based nonprofit consulting firm. Additionally, a limited number of participants will have the opportunity for one-on-one mentorship time with KHARIS Group consultants.

Writers' Colony

The Writers' Colony at Dairy Hollow in Eureka Springs has announced the 2024 "My Time" fellowship funded by James Dean. Writers who are parents of dependent children under the age of 18 are invited to apply. Work may be in any literary genre: poetry, fiction, plays, memoirs, screenplays, or nonfiction. The successful application will demonstrate literary merit and the likelihood of publication. Prior publication is not a requirement.

Four fellowship winners will receive a one-week residency to allow the recipient to focus completely on their work. A $500 stipend will be provided to cover child care and/or travel costs to each recipient.

Fellowship applications must be accompanied by a writing sample and a non-refundable $35 application fee. The deadline is midnight Aug. 5, and the winner will be announced no later than Sept. 9. Preservation Awards

The City of Fayetteville Historic District Commission this month recognized several Fayetteville residents and organizations for significant contributions to historic preservation in Fayetteville.

During its meeting May 9, the commission presented 10 Historic Preservation Awards and handed out letters of acclamation to Maylon T. Rice, the Washington County Historical Society and Jonathan Curth, development services director for the city.

Historic Preservation Awards went to:

Historic Restoration Award -- Richard and Alma Brothers Residence (McKee Properties) for the restoration of the house at 665 N. Gray Ave. designed by E. Fay Jones.

Adaptive Reuse Award -- City Park Fayetteville for its adaptive reuse of the Southwestern Bell storage depot at 1332 N. Leverett Ave.

Historic Cemetery Restoration Award -- Fayetteville Evergreen Association Board of Directors for restoration work and stewardship at Evergreen Cemetery.

Historic Rehabilitation Award -- 26 W. Center, Skiles Architect and Calamon Building Corp. for the rehabilitation of the former First National Bank building (constructed 1898) at 26 W. Center St.

Historic Preservation Award -- Flintlock LAB for its extensive preservation work and stewardship of the properties at 1001 N. Woolsey Ave., 528 N. College Ave. and 403 N. Washington Ave.

Cultural Heritage Stewardship Award -- Lynn and Elaine Wade for their donation of East Mountain Cemetery to NWA Black Heritage.

Cultural Heritage Preservation Award -- NWA Black Heritage for its work to study, commemorate and conserve Black history and placemaking in Fayetteville.

Historic Preservation Award -- Washington County Historical Society for the restoration and stewardship of the Ridge House at 230 W. Center St.

Award for Lifetime Achievement in Historic Preservation -- Stephen A. Smith for service and leadership in protecting and sharing the history and historic places of Fayetteville.

Fayetteville Storyteller Award -- J.B. Hogan for his book "Forgotten Fayetteville" and his ongoing work to tell Fayetteville's story.
